Melina Kibbe

Since 2021, Melina Kibbe, MD, has been the Dean of the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine, the James Carroll Flippin Professor of Medical Science, and the Chief Health Affairs Officer at UVA Health. Throughout her leadership, Dr. Kibbe has focused on aligning cutting-edge research with clinical applications to improve patient outcomes. Her dedication to excellence in medical education, patient care, and healthcare partnerships has positioned UVA as a leading medical research and training institution.

Dr. Kibbe is also the Editor-in-Chief of JAMA Surgery, where her leadership has significantly expanded the journal’s impact. Under her guidance, JAMA Surgery has become the most prominent global publication in the field of surgery, advancing scientific knowledge and surgical practices.

A member of the National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Kibbe has been recognized with 24 prestigious awards for her dedication to teaching and mentoring. Her impact as an educator and leader in medical research continues to inspire future generations of healthcare professionals.

In addition to her academic roles, Dr. Kibbe co-founded VesselTek BioMedical, LLC, a biotech company focused on creating medical devices that treat vascular diseases. Her ongoing research is concentrated on drug-eluting therapies for vascular disease, with her laboratory receiving significant external funding.

At UVA, Dr. Kibbe has overseen impressive growth and transformation. Under her leadership, the School of Medicine has expanded to include over 1,450 faculty members, 607 medical students, 359 graduate students, and more than 2,000 staff. The school now manages $274 million in research funding and holds $1.7 billion in endowments and reserves, solidifying its status as a leading medical research and education institution.

Her leadership has also led to hiring 550 new faculty members, dramatically enhancing the medical school’s clinical and research programs. This expansion has resulted in record increases in surgical volumes, emergency room visits, hospital discharges, and outpatient encounters. Additionally, Dr. Kibbe has focused on enhancing UVA’s educational programs, helping secure full re-accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for eight years. She has also expanded the graduate student program by 60% over the last three years and launched a new degree program in computational biology.

Dr. Kibbe is a passionate advocate for gender equity in biomedical research. Her efforts to address sex bias in clinical trials have led to policy changes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the FDA, and the Government Accountability Office. She also contributed to developing the “Research for All Act of 2015,” which aims to increase inclusivity in biomedical research.

A skilled vascular surgeon, Dr. Kibbe, has treated various vascular conditions, including carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and chronic kidney disease. She is board-certified in general and vascular surgery and holds certifications as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) and Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation. Her research, which has received continuous funding from the NIH, Department of Defense, and American Heart Association, focuses on drug-eluting therapies for vascular diseases.

Dr. Kibbe’s contributions to medicine, surgery, and medical education have profoundly impacted academic and clinical fields. Through her leadership, research, and advocacy, she continues to shape the future of healthcare, making a lasting difference for patients and the next generation of medical professionals.
